SCHOOL VISITS: K - 6
From a quiet lunch with a few students, to large assemblies that get the whole group involved, I love school visits! Topics include horseshoe crabs and shorebirds; care and feeding of your brand-new idea (and how to find an idea in the first place); writing and revision; how a picture book is created; and more. I have also developed longer programs, more suited to an artist-in-residence environment, that include science, art, writing, and even dance.

LISA FUELS CONSERVATION AT WILLOW CREEK
My first ever Authors for Earth Day visit was to Willow Creek Elementary School in eastern Pennsylvania. As the third and fourth grade students walked into the room, I showed them horseshoe crab molts—and got some dramatic reactions! We talked about where ideas come from, and even tried some group improvisation. I used the story of creating my book, High Tide for Horseshoe Crabs, as an example of how a tiny idea can develop into a much larger project.
After the students researched the organizations I suggested, they voted to give the Ocean Conservancy my donation. A big thank you the parent association, as well as to the teachers and staff, for inviting me to Willow Creek. I look forward to another Authors for Earth Day adventure next year!
