SUZY EMPOWERS YOUNG READERS AT CASTLEWOOD
Approximately 350 students at Castlewood School in Bellerose (Queens), NY, voted for their favorite Earth Day
charity on April 24, 2014. First place was awarded to Defenders of Wildlife, and second place was Queens County Farm Museum, a natural preserved 47 acre site right next to the school. It was serendipity that there were 2 winners! I never thought about a "second place" winner. But the kids were so enthusiastic and the vote was so close between the top two—it really just evolved, and I think it was especially meaningful because the kids really care about and visit that next door nature preserve!! It just seemed like a special exception, and a good idea to include 2 winners. It reflects the enthusiasm and caring the kids had for the Earth Day voting.
Children enjoyed the research they did in the computer room at websites for Defenders of Wildlife, Jane Goodall Institute, and the Gorilla Foundation. Colorful posters and murals about the voting event were hung in the hall.
It was a great day of celebrating our planet Earth, and celebrating reading and writing!
My day at the school and the experience I had visiting the Queens County Farm next door will inspire my next book about Horrible Harry.
Tamara Restrepo who organized the Author for Earth Day visit will send along pictures of the wonderful day!
