SCHOOL VISITS: K - 6
For the younger crowd, (K-1) it's more about the simple joy of books and reading, through laughter, call-and-response and song. For 2nd & 3rd, I usually share my "Evil Inner Editors" which are funny, but I also offer strategies about overcoming writing struggles. With 4th thru 6th, I talk more about the revision process. For laughs, we'll take a look at my evil editors, but I'll usually add an activity that drives home the importance of choosing great verbs.

The day before Earth Day, Friday, April 21, 2017, I was bowled over by the lovely campus of UMS-Wright Preparatory School in Mobile Alabama. It was an exquisite spring day, perfect for celebrating the wonders of nature. Janna Corley, Lower School Media Specialist, and her colleagues had prepared the students well. I was greeted by student artwork in the library, then whisked off to the gym for a day of programs with K4 thru 4th grade. The highlight of the day was lunch with about a dozen winning young film makers who had all made creative and entertaining book trailers! We watched the videos, clapped and were sorry there wasn't time to watch all the entries during the lunch. (That's top of my to-do list for this week!)

The panoramic photo, taken from my hotel balcony ON Earth Day just
before I headed back to the airport, shows Mobile Bay gleaming like
a gem at sunrise. I was happy to add a drop of support to help keep
it healthy and beautiful for future generations.

During the first assembly of the day, (3rd and 4th graders), I met Coleman Callaway, son of Casi Callaway, Executive Director of Mobile Baykeeper, which was the hands-down Authors for Earth Day winner. Now in its 20th year, Mobile Baykeeper's mission is to provide citizens a means to protect the beauty, health and heritage of the Mobile Bay Watershed and its coastal communities. I was impressed with Coleman's poise when we called him up in front of his peers to pose with a poster I had prepared for the event. He was a perfect gentleman and an excellent representative for the organization.

KIM EMPOWERS YOUNG READERS AT GUY K. STUMP

We had a grand time at on April 10, 2014. I did a whole school assembly, a couple of gifted-and-talented workshops and an evening program, where the attached photo was taken. (Sorry this adorable little girl's face is cropped out. I wasn't sure I had her mom's permission to show it.) She had come to the program with my I KNOW A WEE PIGGY already in hand, thanks to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, from which she had received a free copy of the book some time before.

Lindsay Coyner, reading specialist, did a wonderful job coordinated the event. The winner of the Authors for Earth Day ballot, by a landslide, was the Wildlife Center of Virginia, which is in Waynesboro, fairly near Stuarts Draft.
